'Going Green' is a hand knitted work inspired by our relationship with nature. It's a socially collaborative interactive piece which was worn by my daughter Mahni Beck on the opening night of the Peace Museum. Visitors were invited to physically interact; touch and feel the work, as well as actively unravel the intricately hand knitted sculpture. The unmasking via unravelling not only challenges the current art practices of preservation and commodidification but also reflects current pressing ecological concerns of climate change. As the sculpture is unmade it has vitality. As the growing yarn ball is passed hand to hand there is a reconfiguration of form and notion that things can be reworked, remade and more essentially recycled post-destruction. These aspects along with the sole use of Green yarn (aside from the Golden Tree) echo and amplify the negative impact of deforestation, as well as fast fashion and accompanying textile wastage.
'Going Green' aims to provide a commentary on the complex relationship between us and our planet, along with the social and cultural aspects of climate change. It highlights the pressing need to consider and respond to the ongoing eco-crisis and safeguard future generations.
